Tuesday, March 31, 2020 “Listen to the Music” The Doobie Brothers

Given the state of the news, 'what the people need is a way to mke them smile' and could there be a happier, more carefree source for this kind of smiling inspiration than the brothers of doobie. Originally called Pud, these guys decided that maybe it was time for a band name change and they probably didn’t go very far to get the inspiration for the one they came up with.

Doobie Brothers members include Michael McDonald (solo career and hundreds of backing vocals and writing credits) and Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter a founding member of Steely Dan and also a member of Jimmy James (Jimi Hendrix) and the Blue Flames.

Lifestyle choices aside you can’t argue with their philosophy, ‘we gotta let the music play.’

So turn it up, ‘be happy and dance your blues away.’ Lyrics below should you be moved to join them in singing and remember to pass the dutchie to the left hand side. Not really a song for us mediocre guitar players so no chords today either.

Be well and happy.

Don't you feel it growin', day by day
People gettin' ready for the news
Some are happy, some are sad
Oh, we got to let the music play
What the people need
Is a way to make 'em smile
It ain't so hard to do if you know how
Gotta get a message
Get it on through
Oh, now mama's go'n' to after 'while
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
All the time

Well I know, you know better
Everything I say
Meet me in the country for a day
We'll be happy
And we'll dance
Oh, we're gonna dance our blues away
And if I'm feelin' good to you
And you're feelin' good to me
There ain't nothin' we can't do or say
Feelin' good, feeling fine
Oh, baby, let the music play

Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
All the time

Like a lazy flowing river
Surrounding castles in the sky
And the crowd is growing bigger
List'nin' for the happy sounds
And I got to let them fly

Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
All the time
