Monday June 29, 2020 “Lust for Life” Iggy Pop
Iggy Pop is like the car wreck that you just can’t turn away from.
This song, co-written by David Bowie, is about Iggy Pop's lifestyle as a hard-living heroin addict. The title is taken from the 1956 film of the same name, which itself is an adaptation of Irving Stone's 1934 biographical novel about the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. The song also makes references to Johnny Yen who is a character in the Wlliam Burroughs novel “The Ticket That Exploded”.
That’s a lot of references for what seems like a straightforward rock song.
The recognizable drum and guitar riffs are notably replicated in the Australian garage rock band Jet's 2003 single "Are You Gonna Be My Girl." The similarities were subject to much scrutiny although both artists suggest referencing Motown hits, such as The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" and Martha & the Vandellas' "I'm Ready for Love."
Music is so incestuous.
This video includes scenes from the movie “Trainspotting” which included "Lust for Life". Since we already have a litany of references, let’s add that one more.
Stay safe and well...and get that lust for life (not the heroin one though)
