Sunday June 28, 2020 “Big Decisions” My Morning Jacket
I am always fascinated by how band names evolve and while researching My Morning Jacket discovered that there are morning coats and morning suits but no jackets. Then I came across a variety of theories on the name involving, sex, drugs and rock and roll none of which really made much sense. So I looked to the originator, Jim James who founded the band in Louisville, KY and felt that his explanation would be the most credible. Asked during an interview where the name came from James simply replied “I have no idea.”
Now we all know.
This song, “Big Decisions” which lead singer Jim James co-wrote with Dan Wilson, who has written songs for many other artists (Adele, Taylor Swift, John Legend) as well as the hit single “Closing Time” for his own band Semisonic, is contained on the 2015 MMJ album/CD “The Waterfall”. This album/CD was a 2016 Grammy nominee for Best Alternative Music Album of the year. Alabama Shakes won the category that year.
James said that his inspiration for the lyrics came from a lunch with friends who were constantly pointing out what is wrong with everything but were unwilling to take action to change any of it.
