Tuesday June 30, 2020 “Abacab” Genesis
You have to love a tune that gives you the song’s structure right in the title. Verse (A), Chorus(B), Bridge (C).
Genesis had a reputation up to this point of creating illusive, fantastical songs that had somewhat obscure lyrics and meaning and the band wanted to break away into a more mainstream rock format with this album/CD. I think you will agree that lyrics like
“Look up on the wall, there on the floor
Under the pillow, behind the door, there's a crack in the mirror…” aren't much more straightforward or easy to interpret!
Original Genesis band members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins would go on to have huge solo careers and Mike Rutherford would also achieve noteworthy additional success with Mike & the Mechanics. Collins was also a child actor and played the Artful Dodger in the London stage production of Oliver and as a child was an extra in the Beatles film “A Hard Day’s Night”.
Mike Rutherford was an avid polo player, the horse thing, but had to give it up after suffering a broken leg, a broken nose and losing several teeth.
Genesis is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, have been nominated for five Grammys, won two and have sold over 100 million records worldwide...and then there’s Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Mike & the Mechanics.
Stay safe and well..."Do you want it? You got it, now you know."
