Saturday June 27, 2020 Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begins) Dave Matthews Band

A reflective song about birth and life...called Samurai Cop!?

This tune appears on the 2018 Dave Matthews Band album/cd “Come Tomorrow” which is their seventh consecutive record to debut at number one, a feat that no other band has achieved.  DMB has been a multi-platinum, successful touring band since 1993 which is a frightening span of time for those of us who might consider their material ‘new music’.

Started in Charlottesville, VA by South African born Dave Matthews and a group of like minded musicians the band came upon their name by accident when early on one of their members was having a flyer printed for a show and just wrote the Dave Matthews Band.  Matthews is quick to point out that it is not his band,  there really is no leader and their decisions are all based on collective thought.

Successful almost from the very beginning, DMB’s first album/CD, “Remember Two Things” independently produced, debuted on college charts as the highest independent entry, and went on to be certified platinum by the RIAA in 2002.

A popular touring group DMB is essentially a jam band in live performances and they encourage fans to record their shows which has clearly not affected their sales negatively.

I know you’re wondering about the title and according to Matthews, “That's what it's called because I was watching a really bad movie called Samurai Cop over and over again at the time I wrote the song.”  Inspiration can come from mysterious places.

Stay safe and well...and remember we all began the same.

The day you came

Naked, afraid

Young mother screams and pushes you

The day you came

Oh joy begin

Weak little thing

More precious there'll be nothing, no

Oh joy begin

Let's not forget these early days

Remember we begin the same

We lose our way in fear and pain

Oh joy begin

First just one step

One word and then

With laughter sing, oh life begin

First just one step

Let's not forget these early days

Remembering we began the same

We lose our way in fear and pain

Oh joy begin

Innocent kiss

Black magic bliss

First broken bone

Sudden and swift

Oh innocence

Let's not forget these early days

Remember we begin the same

We lose our way in fear and pain

Oh joy begin

Oh joy begin
