Wednesday February 24, 2021 “Waterloo Sunset” The Kinks

Written by Kinks lead singer Ray Davies, he called this "a romantic, lyrical song..."

It has often been claimed that the line, "Terry meets Julie, Waterloo Station every Friday night" is about the relationship between actor Terence Stamp and actress Julie Christie. The two actors had been dating since the early '60s and starred together in the film Far From the Madding Crowd.

After their first US tour the Kinks, at the height of their popularity in the 1960s were banned from touring in the US for the next four years because of, as Ray Davies, lead singer and songwriter explained, ”Bad luck, bad management, bad behaviour”.

The Kinks were a hard-drinking band who brought the party to each town they passed by with their wild lifestyle which often spilled out on-stage. One such occasion in May 1965, saw an onstage fight occur between lead guitarist Dave Davies, Ray’s brother and drummer Mick Avory. The scuffle left Davies in the hospital and landed Avory in jail. It was only a small part of a long line of misdemeanours.

The Kinks have had five Top 10 singles on the US Billboard chart. Nine of their albums charted in the Top 40 and they are members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  In the UK, they have had seventeen Top 20 singles and five Top 10 albums.

Stay safe and well...and gaze on your own Waterloo sunset, it is paradise.

Dirty old river, must you keep rolling

Flowing into the night?

People so busy, make me feel dizzy

Taxi light shines so bright

But I don't need no friends

As long as I gaze on

Waterloo sunset

I am in paradise

Every day I look at the world from my window

But chilly, chilly is the evening time

Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine)

 Terry meets Julie

Waterloo stationEvery Friday night

But I am so lazy, don't want to wander

I stay at home at night

 But I don't feel afraid

As long as I gaze on

Waterloo sunset

I am in paradise

Every day I look at the world from my window

But chilly, chilly is the evening time

Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine)

Millions of people swarming like flies 'round

Waterloo underground

But Terry and Julie cross over the river

Where they feel safe and sound

And they don't need no friends

As long as they gaze on

Waterloo Sunset

They are in paradise

Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine)

Waterloo sunset's fine
