Tuesday March 16, 2021 “Time (Clock of the Heart)” Culture Club
One of the best things about rock music is how profound the lyrics can be, as in this song, “time won’t give me time”. Now that’s truth?
We all know Culture Club certainly for their music they had several top ten hits in their brief but successful career but they also had that unique singer/songwriter/frontman Boy George (George O’Dowd) who made an effort to present himself in the most androgynous way possible and it didn’t hurt that he had a quick, smart wit when being interviewed.
As an aside, because you know I love band names, before they were Culture Club the group was called Sex Gang Children. A wise markegting choice to move away from the original name to Culture Club, something remarkably less threatening.
In a world of irony, Boy George would do several Public Service ads denouncing drugs, but then would find himself addicted to heroin. That in addition to the proverbial internal band conflicts and romances gone astray would put an end to the strong run of hits that Culture Club. He would eventually eliminate the drug but wouldn’t have a hit in the US until he recorded the theme from the critically acclaimed movie The Crying Game.
In 1995 Boy George would publish his autobiography Take it Like a Man...I did not make that up.
Stay safe and well...and Boy George’s father was a boxing club manager. Does that strike you as odd?
