Wednesday March 17, 2021 “No Time” Guess Who
Wanted to cover this week’s “time” theme along with something related to St. Patrick for today, so decided to go with “No Time” by the band Guess Who, composed of Burton Cummings, Randy O’Bachman, Jim O’Kale and and Gary McPeterson all good Irish boys.
OK, maybe I added some letters to their names and yeah they’re really a Canadian band but it’s the thought that counts right?
Multi-instrumentalist, primary songwriter and lead singer Burton Cummings is one of the great voices in rock & roll and has received the Order of Canada, which is one of the country's highest civilian honours, established to mark a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community, and service to the nation. He also starred in a really bad movie that was based loosely on Jan Berry’s life (Jan & Dean) which appears to have been erased from the face of the earth.
Burton did not make any other movies.
Randy Bachman, whose son Tal Bachman was an earlier song of the day featured artist, would leave the very successful Guess Who at the height of their success because, as a devout Mormon, Randy could no longer tolerate the lifestyle of sex, drugs and rock & roll. Randy wasn’t specific about which of those were problematic but since he went on to form the band Bachman Turner Overdrive, it likely was not the music and he has seven children.
Back to band names, the original name for the band when they released their first successful album/CD was Chad Allen & the Expressions but like a few past song of the day bands, there was no Chad Allen at that time. Then the band’s US record label decided as a clever marketing strategy to position them as possibly being a British invasion band so they offered their first work by suggesting the DJs should ‘guess who’ the band was.
DJs are not necessarily the smartest folks in the room so many skipped the quiz question and assumed that Guess Who was the band’s name and good or bad it stuck.
Stay safe and well…pay no attention to the Guess Who there will always be time left for the important things in life.
