Wednesday May 11, 2022 “Three Marlenas” The Wallflowers (Jakob Dylan)
Being the son of one of the most influential, innovative, eccentric, and unique songwriters in the history of Western pop music probably opened some doors for Jakob Dylan, but being Bob Dylan's son was just as likely a heavy load to carry as well, in terms or expectations and comparisons.
Jakob Dylan, the youngest of Bob Dylan’s five children was raised in LA by his mother Sara Lownds, the Sara from the Bob Dylan song of the same title as well as the “Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands”.
Jakob Dylan played in a number of bands as a teenager before starting his own band The Apples, changed later to The Wallflowers. They would be signed by Virgin records but after a disappointing debut album would be dropped from the label. However Interscope Records would pick the band up and their second album, produced by T-Bone Burnett, Bringing Down the Horse would be their breakthrough including songs like “6th Avenue Heartache”, “One Headlight” and today’s “Three Marlenas”.
Bringing Down the Horse would be a number four album on Billboards 200, sell more than three million copies and be nominated for five Grammys, over two years 1997 and 1998.
Because Jakob Dylan rarely speaks about his father, there have been ongoing rumors that their relationship is strained. Dylan rebuffed these claims, speaking of his father as "affectionate" towards him and went on to say the two have a "great relationship".
Stay safe and well…and Jakob Dylan has done background vocals for quite a number of diverse artists including some other musical offspring like Louise Goffin (Carole King’s daughter) Holly Williams (granddaughter of Hank Williams) and Jordan Zevon (Warren Zevon’s son).
