Thursday May 12, 2022 “Save Tonight” Eagle Eye Cherry

Cherry was christened Eagle-Eye (yes, his real name) because the first time he looked at his father, avant-garde jazz trumpeter Don Cherry, he did so with only one eye open.  Which of course makes you wonder had he not opened either of his eyes he might have been Blind Boy Cherry.

Cherry spent most of his early childhood in Sweden and on the road with his father, and at age 14, when his family moved to New York, he studied acting at the New York School of Performing Arts. He also took up the drums, playing in several bands, and later played around with keyboards and songwriting.

The lyrical content of “Save Tonight” was inspired by Eagle-Eye’s time spent with his father who would be preparing to go on the road but wanted to be sure to spend time with his son before he left…he would say to him, 'save tonight.'  Included on the million selling album Desireless, the single “Save Tonight” would be a worldwide top ten.

I think of this song as simply a really cool pop tune but that’s why I am no rock critic.  Billboard ‘professional critic' Larry Flick was way more eloquent than me, “..."Save Tonight" (has) a richly soulful edge that cuts through the track's shiny arrangement of strumming acoustic guitars and prickly electric licks. Beyond the single's well-crafted surface are vivid, storyteller lyrics that are smarter than what you'll typically find on radio.”  Yikes!

Stay safe and well…and this really is a nice practice for those temporary absences, ‘save tonight’.

Easy song with one of the most frequently employed chord patterns:  Am F C G

Go on and close the curtains

'Cause all we need is candlelight

You and me, and a bottle of wine

To hold you tonight (oh)

Well we know I'm going away

And how I wish, I wish it weren't so

So take this wine and drink with me

And let's delay our misery

Save tonight and fight the break of dawn

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Save tonight and fight the break of dawn

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

There's a log on the fire

And it burns like me for you

Tomorrow comes with one desire

To take me away (oh it's true)

It ain't easy to say goodbye

Darlin' please, don't start to cry

'Cause girl you know I've got to go (oh)

And Lord I wish it wasn't so

Save tonight and fight the break of dawn

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Save tonight and fight the break of dawn

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Tomorrow comes to take me away

I wish that I, that I could stay

But girl you know I've got to go (oh)

And Lord I wish wasn't so

Save tonight and fight the break of dawn

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Save tonight and fight the break of dawn

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Save tonight and fight the break of dawn

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

Save tonight and fight the break of dawn

Come tomorrow, tomorrow I'll be gone

 Tomorrow I'll be gone

Tomorrow I'll be gone

Tomorrow I'll be gone

Tomorrow I'll be gone
