Tuesday May 10, 2022 “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love & Affection” Nelson
Nelson is the duo of Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, the gorgeous identical twin sons of TV star, teen idol and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Rick Nelson.
Today’s song about being overlooked by an attractive woman was written by the brothers, supposedly inspired by real events. Gunnar said, “When I was in high school, I certainly was not one of the popular kids. It seemed like all the hot chicks used to come to me to get advice about their dirtbag boyfriends…” Any one of you reading this right now who is thinking ‘oh, that poor boy’ needs to go back to the opening sentence about the ‘gorgeous identical twin brothers’.
That scenario clearly never happened to either Gunnar or his brother Matthew.
The twins are in the Guinness Book of World Records as the third generation of number one hit makers. Their grandfather bandleader Ozzie Nelson had a number one hit in 1935 “And Then Some” with his future wife and the twins grandmother Harriet Hilliard handing the vocals; and then their dad Rick had several number one hits including “Poor Little Fool” and “Travellin’Man” in the 1960s; while the twins scored a number one in 1990 with today’s song.
Despite the success of Nelson's debut, their label Geffen Records balked at the band's intended follow-up. entitled Imaginator, as the proposed album was heavier than its pop predecessor and sported a conceptual theme. Geffen refused to release the record and sent the brothers back to the drawing board, resulting in a five-year hiatus between their first and second album which, as you might expect, was the demise of the band Nelson.
Stay safe and well…and as an interesting aside this is the only Hot 100 hit with the word "affection" in the title.
