Thursday September 24, 2020 “Fire” The Pointer Sisters
This is a hot song and not just because of the title.
We’re dealing with a cover technicality here because this is Bruce Springsteen’s song but he didn’t release his own version until eight years after the Pointer Sisters had their number two hit with it. So did Bruce cover his own song or is the Pointers version the cover?
No coin toss here, the Pointers very sexy version, along with their video is the choice. You might disagree and I welcome your comments but in the meantime we’re sticking with the decision.
The Pointer Sisters, from the same Pointer family and indeed sisters, have a long and successful career with three Grammys, three American Music Awards and a basket of Top Ten songs.
Jump into the “Wayback Machine”, for those old enough and foolish enough to remember one of the great Jay Ward animated shows Mr. Peabody & Sherman, and sing along with the Pointers on: “He’s So Shy”, “Slow Hand” (not Eric Clapton), “Jump (For My Love)”, “Automatic” and “So Excited”.
The sisters began their musical adventure touring and performing and providing backing vocals for artists such as Grace Slick, Boz Scaggs and Elvin Bishop. Their big break came on the Elvin Bishop (“Fooled Around & Fell in Love '') tour when they were discovered by Atlantic records and signed to a contract. And along the way they would perform in Nashville where they were the first African American group to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
Stay safe and well...and stick with the philosophy from the Pointers’ first hit “I Know We Can Can”.
