Friday September 25, 2020 “Just My Imagination” Rolling Stones
Who would have the audacity to cover the amazing Temptations? The Rolling Stones would.
This tune was co-written by Norman Whitfield who has been involved with some of the most familiar Motown songs ever like; “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”, “Cloud NIne”, “I Can’t Get Next to You”, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” (not the MicK Jagger version, just a coincidence) among many others.
"Just My Imagination" was anything but romantic," Norman Whitfield said in More Songwriters On Songwriting. "But it did pretty good in the dollars and cents category."
Best part in the Stones live version is the sweet, romantic line that sums up the song: “...When her arms enfold me I feel a tender rhapsody, but then reality, she doesn’t f*ckin know me, It’s just my imagination…” Not the only Motown song that the Stones covered which suggests the broad influence these tunes have.
So does Mick play the guitar in this video? Maybe, probably not, but he is still one of the most interesting rock & roll frontmen...maybe ever!
Stay safe and well...do let your imagination run away with you.
