Friday June 18, 2021 “Citronella” Augean Stables
Frivolous Friday for weird band names.
Nope, this song is not about mosquito repellent but it deals rather harmlessly with teenage lust, and it is sung by a group that I am confident none of you have heard before...and may never want to hear again.
Augean Stables started when Dave Riedel and Wilson Rothman, in 7th grade, had to write a project together for English class. The subject was "Barn Burning" by William Faulkner so they wrote and performed a song called "Barns are Burning," to the tune of "Beds are Burning" by Midnight Oil.
“Citronella” came together after that 7th grade experience, perhaps in the 8th grade, as today's song suggests, and this band is truly the epitome of quirky.
Oh yeah the band name, Augean Stables. Around 600 BC Heracles (later changed to Hercules) was tasked with twelve labors as penance for murdering his wife and two sons and among those labors was cleaning the Augean stables which hadn’t been cleaned for more than thirty years. Hey, I don’t make this stuff up, OK maybe sometimes I do, but not this time.
Stay safe and well...and give the song a shot, it’s good fun.
