Friday June 18, 2021 “Citronella” Augean Stables

Frivolous Friday for weird band names.

Nope, this song is not about mosquito repellent but it deals rather harmlessly with teenage lust, and it is sung by a group that I am confident none of you have heard before...and may never want to hear again.

Augean Stables started when Dave Riedel and Wilson Rothman, in 7th grade, had to write a project together for English class. The subject was "Barn Burning" by William Faulkner so they wrote and performed a song called "Barns are Burning," to the tune of "Beds are Burning" by Midnight Oil.

“Citronella” came together after that 7th grade experience, perhaps in the 8th grade, as today's song suggests, and this band is truly the epitome of quirky.

Oh yeah the band name, Augean Stables.  Around 600 BC Heracles (later changed to Hercules) was tasked with twelve labors as penance for murdering his wife and two sons and among those labors was cleaning the Augean stables which hadn’t been cleaned for more than thirty years.  Hey, I don’t make this stuff up, OK maybe sometimes I do, but not this time.

Stay safe and well...and give the song a shot, it’s good fun.

Citronella lives on my block

She rides the bus with me

Citronella gets off on the second bus stop

She's the prettiest girl in the eighth grade

Citronella, I love you I just want you to know

Citronella, I need you so badly badly badly

You're the only girl for me in the eighth grade

I'm gonna ask Citronella to the Halloween dance

We can dress up like king and queen

Citronella goes with some other guy to the Halloween dance

They dress up like doctor and nurse

 O Lord, I don't know what I'm gonna do

It's just tearing me apart

Lord, I've never felt so blue

How am I supposed to mend this broken heart?

 Citronella, I love you

I just want you to know

Citronella, I need you so bad badly badly

You're the only girl for me in the eighth grade

I'm gonna give Citronella one last chance

To prove who is the best man

Gonna ask her to the Christmas dance

I hope she'll say yes because

My daddy's gonna pick us up in the big white van

We can sit in the way way back

I'm gonna take Citronella by the hand

I'm gonna tell her that, I'm gonna tell her that, you know

Citronella, I love you I just want you to know

Citronella, I need you so bad badly badly

You're the only girl for me in the eighth grade
