Sunday September 6, 2020 “Incense and Peppermints” Strawberry Alarm Clock

And the drummer is the lead singer...oh wait he is not actually the singer.

The singer was actually Greg Munford, a 16-year-old singer who was brought in to sing harmonies when they were recording this song, but ended up doing the lead vocals. He was not a regular band member, but ended up singing a tune that would rocket to #1 in the United States and sell over a million copies. Despite this success, Munford never actually joined the group, and probably never shared in the royalties.

The song was written by “Strawberry Alarm Clock” keyboardist Mark Weitz and Ed King (future Lynyrd Skynrd guitarist) but, as is often the way in the music business, the writing credits were given solely to John Carter and Tim Gilbert two musicians that were not part of the band and contributed only minimally to the final tune.

In case you were wondering, the band name comes from “Strawberry Fields Forever” and a Baby Ben alarm clock in one of the band members bedrooms. Sometimes it can be that simple.

Stay safe and well...and remember that incense and peppermints are the color of time.

Good sense, innocence, cripplin' mankind

Dead kings, many things I can't define

Occasions, persuasions clutter your mind

Incense and peppermints, the color of time

Who cares what games we choose?

Little to win but nothin' to lose

 Incense and peppermints, meaningless nouns

Turn on, tune in, turn your eyes around

Look at yourself, look at yourself, yeah, yeah

Look at yourself, look at yourself, yeah, yeah, yeah!

To divide this cockeyed world in two

Throw your pride to one side, it's the least you can do

Beatniks and politics, nothing is new

A yardstick for lunatics, one point of view

Who cares what games we choose?

Little to win but nothin' to lose

 Good sense, innocence, cripplin' mankind

Dead kings, many things I can't define

Occasions, persuasions clutter your mind

Incense and peppermints, the color of time

Who cares what games we choose?

Little to win but nothin' to lose

 Incense and peppermints

Incense and peppermints

 Sha la la
