Saturday September 5, 2020 “In the Meantime” Spacehog
Existential rock?
Although all of the original members of Spacehog are from the UK the band was actually formed when they reconnected in New York City through a variety of random coincidences. Karma? The song’s somewhat obscure lyrics, what song isn’t though, seemed appropriate for this moment of continuing sheltering when they are explained by lead singer and songwriter Royston Langdon.
In an interview he said that , "It's using some kind of metaphor of a worldly or inner-worldly search for the end of isolation, and the acceptance of one's self is in there.” And though the song title doesn’t appear in the chorus as might be expected it does appear in various forms three other times in the verses. It would be a number one hit for Spacehog, their only real successful entry into the charts.
Langdon had a famous father-in-law for several years while he was married to Steven Tyler’s (Aerosmith) daughter Liv. And you know I have a fascination with band names, so according to founding memberJohnny Cragg, AKA Corky (?), when they were working on names “This one wasn't shite.” Brilliance once again.
Stay safe and well...and hopefully you will enjoy this song more than their audience in the video seems to.
