Monday September 7, 2020 “New York, New York” Ryan Adams

Irony at its very worst.

Ryan Adams was born and raised in North Carolina where he was the founding  member of the almost super famous band Whiskeytown but he left the group and moved to New York to be closer to his then girlfriend who he refers to in this song as “New York”, not really the city.  Although Adams became a long time NYC resident his girlfriend left for points unknown, without him.

Ryan Adams, perhaps not the nicest person, is occasionally confused with Canadian singer/songwriter Bryan Adams.  At a concert at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, someone in the audience yelled out a request for "Summer of '69", a hit by the similarly-named Bryan Adams. Ryan reacted with a stream of expletives, and ordered the house lights turned on. He eventually found the fan who made the request, paid him $30 cash as a refund for the show, ordered him to leave, and said he would not play another note until he had left.

There are other controversies that surround Ryan Adams and sometimes it is a confusing decision for us to make, separating the artist's personal behavior from their music.  The judgement is yours.  In the meantime, this is a neat song IMHO.

Adams was an admitted fan of the TV show Friends so much of a fan that the video that accompanies this is supposed to be an near exact replica of the opening shots of that show.  It was filmed on this date, September 7 in 2001 and the World Trade towers are prominently featured in background shots.  Four days later they would be destroyed by terrorists.  Irony at its very worst.

Stay safe and well...I still love you New York (the city).

Well, I shuffled through the city on the 4th of July

I had a firecracker waiting to blow

Breakin' like a rocket who was makin' its way

To the cities of Mexico

Lived in an apartment out on Avenue A

I had a tar-hut on the corner of 10th

Had myself a lover who was finer than gold

But I've been broken up and busted up since

And love don't play any games with me, anymore

Like she did before

The world won't wait, so I better shake

That thing right out there through the door

Hell, I still love you, New York

Found myself a picture that would fit in the folds

Of my wallet and it stayed pretty good

Still amazed I didn't lose it on the roof of the place

When I was drunk and I was thinking of you

Every day the children they were singing their tunes

Out on the streets and you could hear from inside

Used to take the subway up to Houston and 3rd

I would wait for you and I'd try to hide

And love won't play any games with you, anymore

If you don't wanna 'em to

The world won't wait and I watched you shake

But honey, I don't blame you

Hell, I still love you, New York

Hell, I still love you, New York, New York

I remember Christmas in the blistering cold

In a church on the Upper West Side

Babe, I stood there singing, I was holding your arm

You were holding my trust like a child

Found a lot of trouble out on Avenue B

But I tried to keep the overhead low

Farewell to the city and the love of my life

At least we left before we had to go

And love won't play any games with you, anymore

If you don't want 'em to

So we better shake this old thing out the door

I'll always be thinkin' of you

I always love you, love New York

I always love you, love New York

I always love you, love New York

I always love you, love New York

New York, New York
