Friday September 4, 2020 “Forget You” Cee Lo Green
The general audience version.
It’s frivolous Friday and although this is not a frivolous song, but really a great one, the story behind it is quite frivolous.
Cee Lo Green was pissed that Elektra, his record label, was not supporting his work properly nor would they release him from his contract because they claimed he owed them some songs. So in a moment of true spite and anger he writes a song that he knows will infuriate them called “F*ck You” directed more at the record label executives than the romantic theme of the lyric and guaranteed to end his contract.
He plays it for the ‘suits’ expecting to be fired and what do you know they recognize that this could be a monster hit with a slight lyrical modification and they also suggest adding some vocals from a then rising star at the label, Bruno Mars.
The song would spend 26 weeks on the charts, eventually become a number two hit and Spin magazine named the “F*ck You” version the best song of 2010, even as it contains no less than sixteen f-bombs.
Stay safe and well...and I bet you substitute the original lyric for “Forget” when you sing the song, at least in your head.
