Tuesday September 1, 2020 “Don’t You (Forget about Me)” Simple Minds

Another twofer, kind of.  Everyone’s favorite overplayed 80s song along with a four minute video synopsis of the Breakfast Club.

“Don’t You…” was written specifically for the movie and presented to Bryan Ferry (Roxy Music) and Billy Idol both of whom turned it down so one of the song’s co-writers Keith Forsey (“Shakedown” from Beverly Hills Cop, “What a Feeling” from Flashdance) offered it to the band Simple Minds who also refused to record it.  Enter John Hughes the writer/producer/director of Breakfast Club who screened the movie for the band which sold them on the idea.

Apparently the band originally known as Johnny & the Self Abusers, took the name Simple Minds from a line in the Bowie song “The Jean Genie” and over the years there have been as many as twenty different changing musicians with the only constant being founding members lead singer Jim Kerr and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Burchill.  Side note, Kerr was married to Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders and actress Patsy Kensit (Lethal Weapon 2).

As for the movie, Breakfast Club it would introduce us to a group of actors who would go on to relatively long careers and would be the continuation of  brilliant and highly entertaining films created by the legendary writer/directorJohn Hughes who unfortunately left us all too early in 2009 at age 59. Trivia, that is John Hughes driving the car at the end of the movie picking up Brian, the Anthony Michael Hall character.

Stay safe and well...and as the song suggests we will win in the end.

Hey, hey, hey, hey

Ooh woh

Won't you come see about me?

I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby

Tell me your troubles and doubts

Giving me everything inside and out and

Love's so real in the dark

Think of the tender things that we were working on

Slow change may pull us apart

When the light gets into your heart, baby

 Don't you, about me

Don't, don't, don't, don't

Don't you, forget about me

 Will you stand above me?

Look my way, never love me

Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling

Down, down, down

 Will you recognize me?

Call my name or walk on by

Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling

Down, down, down, down

 Hey, hey, hey, hey

Ooh woh

 Don't you try and pretend

It's my feeling we'll win in the end

I won't harm you or touch your defenses

Vanity and security

 Don't you forget about me

I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby

Going to take you apart

I'll put us back together at heart, baby

 Don't you, forget about me

Don't, don't, don't, don't

Don't you, forget about me

 As you walk on by

Will you call my name?

As you walk on by

Will you call my name?

When you walk away

 Or will you walk away?

Will you walk on by?

Come on, call my name

Will you call my name?

 I say

(Lala la la lala la la)

Will you call my name?

As you walk on by
