Monday August 17, 2020 Woodstock Day Three
Good choices on Day Three as well, with The Band, Ten Years After, Johnny Winter, Blood Sweat & Tears and Crosby Stills & Nash (and Young who would not allow any footage of him to be included). Now I know that CSN&Y would seem the logical choice here but Woodstock was our first real visual exposure to the wild stage antics of Joe Cocker.
His performance of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends” is as enjoyable, and somewhat frightening to watch as it is to listen to. The backing musicians, The Grease Band as they were known, were all journeymen rock musicians but would be replaced on Cockers’ next tour with a band known as “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” an ever more famous group of musicians that included Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Carl Radle (Eric Clapton, Derek & the Dominos), Jim Keltner (George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Carly Simon) and Jim Price (Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Delaney & Bonnie).
When asked about his manic performances Cocker replied “I guess that came with my frustration at never having played piano or guitar.” There is of course no denying that this man gets into his music in a very physical way and makes it easy to join with him..
Stay safe and well...and we could always use and give a little help to/from our friends.
