Monday August 10, 2020 “The Cutter” Echo & the Bunnymen
For those soccer fans, Liverpool easily won the Premier League 2019/2020 title with a season that was headed for the record books with only one loss before covid interrupted the season. And of course Liverpool is the home of the Beatles but the city also has a much broader musical heritage than just that one unbelievable group so let’s go there for a short musical tour.
We will begin the adventure with the random selection of Echo & the Bunnymen a name which band co-founder Will Sergeant explained was one of several choices and “I thought it was just as stupid as the rest.” Another version of the band name is that when they originally started out they had no drummer but used a drum machine with the brand name ‘Echo’.
This song, “The Cutter” which almost defies interpretation was according to some influenced by the Anthony Burgess novel and Stanley Kubrick film ”A Clockwork Orange”. Cutter being a "Clockwork" drug of favor and the band's label was named Korova after the Korova Milk Bar in the movie/novel.
Lead singer and songwriter Ian McCulloch has been a lifelong Liverpool F.C. soccer fan, a season ticket holder and has even recorded an anthem for the 2006 championship team.
I know you’re wondering so, yes the video was filmed in Iceland and that is a sitar that introduces the song.
Stay safe and well...so many more Liverpool bands to come.
