August 8, 2020 “Back in the High Life Again” Steve Winwood
We had this storm several days ago and all of a sudden it was ‘boom boom out go the lights’ taking the internet as well so living literally in the dark ages made song of the day impossible to keep up with. But here we are back in the high life again, fully electric and wifi’ed over our heads so this song just seemed appropriate..
Hope everyone else affected by Isaias weathered it ok as well.
Steve Winwood, a very interesting rock and roll character started his association with music at a very early age learning to play drums, guitar and piano and at age fifteen joined the Spencer Davis Group along with his brother Muff Davis. It is his soulful, beyond his years voice that sold what would become a rock n’ roll and r&b classic “Gimme Some Lovin”. Oh yeah, he wrote the song as well as playing the identifying lick on the Hammond B3 organ and said they recorded it in two takes, and he was seventeen then.
He would leave that group and connect with Dave Mason, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood and form the band Traffic who would release several influential, critically and commercially successful albums/CDs. After that adventure Winwood connected with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker, both ex-Cream, to form the very successful but short lived Blind Faith, and then on to another brief stay with Ginger Baker’s Air Force before embarking on his solo career.
He has done session work with essentially every prominent artist you might think of and if you listen carefully to “Back in the High Life” you will pick-up some background vocals from James Taylor and Chaka Khan.
Stay safe and well...and oh yes it is good to be back in the high (electric/internet) life again.
