Tuesday August 4, 2020 “A Pirate Looks at Forty” Jimmy Buffet

Is it really summer without Jimmy Buffet?

We have all likely been to a Jimmy Buffet concert to join the Parrotheads and his communal celebration of summer and sing along with songs that are so familiar to us that we actually do know most of the words.  The last time I saw him, at Jones Beach, it started to rain during the first half of his show.  Not rain but RAIN.

The band left the stage with the promise of returning shortly for the second half of the show while the audience was left soaking up the rain.  Then the stage lights came back up and Buffet returned by himself with an acoustic guitar and said “Hey it’s only rain and if you guys are sticking around I am too.” and he did a set of covers and deeper Buffet tunes until the band returned to continue the show.  It was both impressive and memorable.

Not just a singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffet has written three number one best selling books, two children’s books, appeared in several movies, has his own brand of Margaritaville tequila, a licensing agreement for Landshark beer, two restaurant chains, a clothing line, a senior citizen retirement village, a gambling casino, is part owner of two minor league baseball teams and...well he is quite the entrepreneur with an estimated net worth of $550 million.

Maybe he is related to Warren Buffet...nope.

It just wouldn’t be Jimmy Buffet it wasn’t live so here’s a two/fer with a taste from Bob Marley’s “Redemtion Song”.  Be honest, after watching the video, aren’t you just a little happier.

Stay safe and well...and this is for those that are looking at forty or maybe looking back at forty.

Mother, mother ocean, well I have heard you call

Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall

'Cause you've seen it all, you've seen it all

Watched the men who rode you switch from sails to steam

And in your belly you hold the treasures that few have ever seen

Most of 'em dreams, most of 'em dreams

Yes I am a pirate, a few hundred years too late

The cannons don't thunder, there's nothing to plunder

I'm an under-forty victim of fate

Arriving too late, arriving too late

I've done a bit of smuggling, I've run my share of weed

And I've made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast

It's never meant to last, it's never meant to last

And I have been drunk now for over two weeks

I've passed out and I've rallied and I've sprung a few leaks

But I got stop wishing, got to go fishing

Down to rock bottom again

With just a few friends, just a few friends

With just a few friends, just a few friends
