Thursday February 11, 2021 “This Magic Moment” The Drifters
Precious and few moments yesterday, magic moments today.
I suspect most of you think of this group as Ben E. King and the Drifters but truth be told there were many different lead singers for the Drifters including Clyde McPhatter, Johnny Wiiliams, Rudy Lewis, Johnny Moore, Bill Pinkney, Charlie Thomas and Ben E. King, and they all sounded the same.
“This Magic Moment” was co-written by Doc Pomus who was responsible for many early rock & roll classics including "A Teenager in Love", "Save The Last Dance For Me", "Hushabye", "This Magic Moment", "Turn Me Loose", "Sweets For My Sweet", "Go, Jimmy, Go", "Little Sister", "Can't Get Used to Losing You", "Suspicion", "Surrender", and "(Marie's the Name of) His Latest Flame" just to name a few.
Doc Pomus (Jerome Felder) was a white, Jewish, Brooklyn boy afflicted with polio who wanted desperately to be a black blues singer but when that didn’t work out he discovered he had a knack for creating the kind of tunes and lyrics that made teenage record buyers in the early sixties buy lots of records.
For our valentine purposes though this tune keeps the romantic mood flowing with musical proclamations of love spirited along with a sweet and memorable melody.
.Stay safe and well...this magic moment will last forever...or at least for 2:26 minutes.
