Thursday August 26, 2021 “Here I Go Again” Whitesnake (80s)
Snakes on the plane...no snakes in our rock music.
A big part of 80s music was ’hair bands’ and Whitesnake is the epitome of this genre. They had big hits, including today’s number one hit “Here I Go Again”, good looks, great clothes, hot models and cool cars in their videos and great hair. OK maybe ‘great’ isn’t the right word for their hair, but it was so 80s appropriate.
Whitesnake is essentially singer/songwriter David Coverdale who formed the band after serving as the lead singer for Deep Purple for a number of years. Coverdale would write, along with Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden (apparently no relation to Gerry Marsden of Gerry & the Pacemakers), and sing many of the group's biggest hits.
The video for this song is a complete flashback to the 80s. Coverdale, a beautiful man (that’s a completely objective statement) with a great voice, emoting dramatically, while a hot model, Tawny Kitaen, the future Mrs. Coverdale, slithers actoss a variety of expensive cars.
Sure, tell your friends that you never listen to this kind of musical crap but I know, just like me, you are holding a hairbrush microphone and you know every word to this song as you sing along. Me, I’m in my car with the windows rolled up, screaming, “Like a drifter I was born to walk alone…”
Stay safe and well...and I know we are dealing with musical animals at the zoo this week, but I really don’t think zoo animals are what this band had in mind when they decided to call themselves Whitesnake.
