Friday August 27, 2021 “Float On” Modest Mouse (90s)
This is either a great song or one of the top earworms of all time (remember those songs that you just can’t get out of your head).
Modest Mouse is an American rock band formed in 1992 in Issaquah, Washington, and currently based in Portland, Oregon. The founding members are lead singer/guitarist Isaac Brock, drummer Jeremiah Green, and bassist Eric Judy. Strongly influenced by Pavement, Pixies, XTC, and Talking Heads, the band rehearsed, rearranged, and recorded demos for almost two years before finally signing with small-town indie label K Records and releasing numerous singles.
Modest Mouse took their name from a passage in The Mark On The Wall, Virginia Woolf's first published story. ("…for those are the very pleasantest thoughts, and very frequent even in the minds of modest, mouse-coloured people…").
So appropriate for these times, this song was written to reassure that everything will be alright with life. Lead singer Isaac Brock had lost two close friends in life and felt he needed to be reassured with the good things in life. "I was just kind of fed up with how bad shit had been going, and how dark everything was, with bad news coming from everywhere," he said.
I never really paid attention to the lyrics of this song except for the ‘float on…’ parts but I suggest giving the song a listen with the lyrics, they’re weird and fun.
Stay safe and well...and float on.
