Thursday March 31, 2022 “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” Future Islands

Future Islands caught my attention on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2014 with their critically acclaimed song “Seasons (Waiting on You)” , with a completely bizarre performance of it.  And I have remained interested ever since, always wondering if maybe frontman Samuel T. Herring (I swear that’s his name) was somehow channeling Marlon Brando.

“Seasons (Waiting on You)” was considered the best song of 2014 by Pitchfork, and NME and that performance on the Late Show with David Letterman in March 2014, became the most-viewed video on the show's YouTube page.

And as hard as it is to imagine why anyone would try to cover Tina Turner who brings such power and personality to all of her vocals, the Future Islands take on Tina’s song from the movie Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome is really compelling.

Future Islands started out making electro-pop music together in 2003 while attending East Carolina University's art program and billed themselves as Art Lord & the Self Portraits.  They have recorded six albums and  have opened for Morrissey, Grace Jones, Phantogram, Titus Andronicus and Okkervil River.

Stay safe and well…and counter to today’s title, we can never have too many heroes.

Out of the ruins

Out from the wreckage

Can't make the same mistake this time

We are the children

The last generation (the last generation)

We are the ones they left behind

And I wonder when we are ever gonna change it

Living under the fear 'til nothing else remains

We don't need another hero

We don't need to know the way home

All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome

Looking for something

We can rely on

There's got to be something better out there

Love and compassion

Their day is coming (coming)

All else are castles built in the air

And I wonder when we are ever gonna change it

Living under the fear 'til nothing else remains

All the children say

We don't need another hero

We don't need to know the way home

All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome

So what do we do with our lives?

We leave only a mark

Will our story shine like a life

Or end in the dark?

In the name of nothing

We don't need another hero

We don't need to know the way home

All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome

All the children say

We don't need another hero (we don't need another hero)

We don't need to know the way home

All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome
