Tuesday March 29, 2022 “Believe” DMA’s
Unusual covers continue with Australian band DMAs…wait, who?
There’s this really interesting show on Australian radio station Triple J called Like a Version (spelling correct) where they invite artists, mostly Australian, to come in and perform their version of a song of their choice. So today’s cover song will be Australian band the DMAs doing their version of Cher’s “Believe” …without the signature auto tuning on the vocals.
And who are the DMAs? They are an Australian three-piece rock band formed in 2012 in Sydney composed of Tommy O'Dell, Matt Mason, and Johnny Took. They were originally called the Dirty MAs…yeah, I don’t know either, probably it means something in Australia.
Many great songs are written and recorded quickly in short bursts of inspiration. “Believe” wasn't one of them, as it took nearly six years, six songwriters and at least three producers as they attempted to create this massive international 1999 number one hit for Cher...her first since 1974, more than 25 years.
DMAs’ cover of Cher's "Believe" was voted number six on Triple J's Hottest 100 list in 2016 which included all songs released that year, not just their Like a Version tunes. The video has received more than ten million views on YouTube and became the firstLike a Version cover to ever rank this highly in the Hottest 100.
Stay safe and well…and does the DMAs lead singer Tommy O’Dell look like perhaps the most unlikely rock star ever…maybe, but he can sing.
