Monday March 28, 2022 “Don’t Stop the Sandman” Rock Sugar

It’s been a while since we did a week of covers, OK we did those Beatles covers but that doesn’t count. So this week we are going to be listening to some (more) covers and once we get into them I think you will begin to appreciate that these are not your run of the mill covers and probably not even by artists that you are familiar with...but I think you will enjoy them.

Let’s start with a band that has a great sense of humor along with genuine talent and a frontman with remarkable vocal abilities.  Rock Sugar takes what might initially appear to be unlikely song pairings and blends them together. And the weird thing is how well it works…OK go with me on this until you listen to today’s mash up of Metallica’s “Enter the Sandman” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”.

Does it work?  To quote band co-founder and frontman Jess Harnell from today’s song “Oooh yeah”.

Once you stop smiling when Harnell breaks into the best ever Steve Perry vocals coming out of the immediately recognizable Metallica intro I am pretty confident you will be thinking, wait a minute this is clever and it’s really working…but you will still be smiling because it is just such darned good fun and so well done.

In a world of contradictions when Englewood NJ born lead singer Harnell isn’t screaming rock songs and looking like the cliche of a heavy metal star he is a voice actor, voicing characters as diverse as Crash Bandicoot, Animaniacs, Tom & Jerry characters and both Ironhide and Barricade from the Transformer movies.

If you find today’s song interesting, and I hope you do, these guys have a couple of albums and do mash-ups of songs like”You Shook Me All Night Long” ( AC/DC) /”Like a Prayer ” (Madonna) and “Crazy Train” (Ozzy)/ “Jesse’s Girl” (Rick Springfield)...and they are not only a good time but really well done.

Stay safe and well…and does today's double hit count as a two-fer, “Ooooh yeah!”

Ooooh yeah!

Just a small town girl

Livin' in a lonely world

She took the midnight train goin' anywhere

Just a city boy

Born and raised in south Detroit

He took the midnight train goin' anywhere

A singer in a smoky room

A smell of wine and cheap perfume

For a smile they can share the night

It goes on and on, and on, and on

 Strangers waiting

Up and down the boulevard

Their shadows searching in the night

Streetlights, people

Living just to find emotion

Hiding somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill

Everybody wants a thrill

Payin' anything to roll the dice

Just one more time

Some will win, some will lose

Some were born to sing the blues

Oh, the movie never ends

It goes on and on, and on, and on

 Strangers waiting

Up and down the boulevard

Their shadows searching in the night

Streetlights, people

Living just to find emotion

Hiding somewhere in the night

 Don't stop believin'

Hold on to the feelin'

Streetlights, people

 Don't stop believin'

Hold on

Streetlights, people

 Don't stop believin'

Hold on to the feelin'

Streetlights, people
