Saturday June 26, 2021 “Brave” Sara Bareilles

Bareilles co-wrote this song with Jack Antonoff, lead singer/songwriter and guitarist for the group Bleachers. Bareilles explained in a video interview that the lyrics were inspired by a close friend who was struggling with coming out.

Sara Bareiles’ first big hit was “Love Song” from her debut Little Voice which lyrically suggests that “I’m not going to write you a love song ‘cause you asked for it, ‘cacuse you need it…” leaves you with the impression that it relates to a bitter break-up.  However, in interviews Sara has said that the record was directed to the ‘suits’at her label who were telling her that she needed to write a love song...so she did and mocked them with it.

“Brave” was nominated for a Grammy in 2014 for best pop performance but lost to “Royals” by Lorde, a really poor choice by whoever makes those decisions, in my humble opinion. Sara Bareilles would also write the musical score for the Broadway production of the movie Waitress.

Stay safe and well...and as today’s song suggests, always be brave and always be respectful and accepting of the choices of others.

You can be amazing

You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug

You can be the outcast

Or be the backlash of somebody's lack of love

Or you can start speaking up

Nothing's gonna hurt you the way that words do

When they settle 'neath your skin

Kept on the inside and no sunlight

Sometimes a shadow wins

But I wonder what would happen if you

 Say what you wanna say

And let the words fall out

Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say

And let the words fall out

Honestly I wanna see you be brave

 I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

I wanna see you be brave

 I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

I wanna see you be brave

Everybody's been there, everybody's been stared down

By the enemy

Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing

Bow down to the mighty

But don't run, stop holding your tongue

Maybe there's a way out of the cage where you live

Maybe one of these days you can let the light in

Show me how big your brave is

 Say what you wanna say

And let the words fall out

Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say

And let the words fall out

Honestly I wanna see you be brave

 Innocence, your history of silence

Won't do you any good

Did you think it would?

Let your words be anything but empty

Why don't you tell them the truth?

 Say what you wanna say

And let the words fall out

Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say

And let the words fall out

Honestly I wanna see you be brave

 I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

I wanna see you be brave

 I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

See you be brave

 I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

 I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you
