Sunday July 26, 2020 “Doin Time” Lana Del Rey (2010s)
In college she was majoring in philosophy and metaphysics, maybe that explains something.
Born Elizabeth Grant in Lake Placid, NY she was signed to a record label while she was a senior at Fordham University and almost gave up on music after an initial venture failed to chart. However, in 2010 she was inspired to become Lana Del Rey, influenced by 40’s movie star Lana Turner, and released “Video Games” which won a number of awards and got her what would turn out to be a nearly tragic appearance on Saturday Night Live.
Her performance on SNL, or as some of her critics said ‘lack of performance’ almost ended Lana Del Rey, but her talent and perseverance shone through and she soldiered on to create a solid career for herself both as a songwriter and a singer with a distinctive voice. She does admit to not being an exciting live performer saying, “I pretty much just stand there and sing.” In the meantime she has sold more than 19 million albums and 13 million singles worldwide.
She claims her musical inspirations are everywhere from Andrew Lloyd Webber, to the 60's girl group the Crystals, to Nirvana with so many others in between.
This song originally written and recorded by LA ska, punk band Sublime is loosely based on an interpretation of George Gershwin's “Summertime” from Porgy & Bess and has two alternating stories going on, one a harmless piece about trying to get a party going and another a fairly dark relationship saga that may not end well.
As always lyrics are included because you like to sing along but just don’t quite understand what she is saying...or why she is saying it, probably that metaphysics background.
Stay safe and well...and sometimes the living is easy, especially in the summertime.
