Saturday July 25, 2020 “Valerie” Amy Winehouse (2000s)
...and then she died!
Winehouse released her second album, “Back to Black”, in 2006, which went on to become an international success and one of the best-selling albums in UK history. At the 2007 Brit Awards it was nominated for British Album of the Year, and she received the award for British Female Solo Artist. At the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008, she won five awards, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night and becoming the first British woman to win five Grammys, including three of the General Field "Big Four" Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year (for "Rehab"), as well as Best Pop Vocal Album.
One of Amy Winehouse's greatest musical loves was the 60's girl groups and she modeled her look from the Ronnettes. When Ronnie Spector saw a picture of Amy she said, ”I don't know her, I never met her, but when I saw that pic, I thought, 'That's me!'. Winehouse was plagued by drug and alcohol problems throughout her short career and they frequently impacted her performances, leading to forgotten and slurred lyrics, stumbling on stage and poor audience receptions, even booing.
A major talent cut short by her poor choices, Amy Winehouse died in 2011 and entered that mythical “27 club” which included Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Brain Jones, Kurt Cobain and others.
This video features the song “Valerie'' originally recorded by the Zutons and co-written by their lead singer Dave McCabe.
Stay safe and well...and out of rehab.
