Sunday July 12, 2020 “Under the Milky Way” The Church
It’s Sunday so we are going to (The) Church.
Appearing on their fifth album “Starfish” and written by Steven Kilbey, co-founder and lead singer of The Church, with his then girlfriend Karin Jansson, “Under the MIlky Way” was ranked number thirty three on the ‘top 100 most Australian songs of all time’. Kilbey has another 750 songs that he has written according to the Australasian Performing Rights Association.
He is also a music producer, a painter, a poet and often refers to himself as “The Time Being”.
If you were wondering about the song’s meaning, according to Kilbey “It’s not about anything. It’s a portal into your mind.” Kilbey said the song’s success was a mixed blessing in that it provided access to many temptations but also led to “...the guys in the band hating each other and hating me (Kilbey)” and ultimately led to the band’s demise.
They actually started to eliminate this song, their most popular tune, because fans would leave after they played it.
Stay safe and well...and under the milky way.
