Saturday July 11, 2020 “Working for the Weekend” Loverboy
Loverboy, originally Cover Boy, were rejected by almost every major US record label until they were finally signed by Columbia of Canada in 1980.
After the very strong reception of their first two singles “Turn Me Loose” and “Working for the Weekend” their record label decided that it was time for them to end the common practice of providing cash incentives for radio stations to include their singles in their playlist. And they determined that Loverboy was strong enough to put an end that practice.
On the strength of what they perceived to be Loverboy’s popularity they ended the incentives, and no surprise, it also ended Loverboy’s appearance on major radio’s playlists. They could’ve been contenders.
Stay safe and well...and remember the Saturday Night Live skit where Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze audition for The Chippendales to this tune.
