Wednesday July 8, 2020 “Wednesday Morning 3 AM” Simon & Garfunkel

Such a lovely song about a liquor store robbery.

Their first collaboration was as the Peptones but we initially met Simon & Garfunkel in 1956 with the almost hit “Hey Schoolgirl” when they were known as Tom & Jerry.  Checkout the link for their earliest look and sound.   After that adventure they were Jerry Landis and Paul Kane and then Kane & Garr and finally in 1967 they abandoned all previous disguises and became Simon & Garfunkel.

They have been nominated for twelve Grammys and won an astounding nine of them, plus four Grammy Hall of Fame Awards and are Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members as well.  They have sold 38 million albums/cds as a duo and even more as solo artists, held a concert in Central Park that attracted more than 500,000 people, and their album “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was the best selling album in 1970, 1971 and 1972 and the best selling album of all time at that moment.

You would think all that success would keep them together but alas they hit a point where they hardly spoke to each other and eventually broke up with Garfunkel pursuing an acting career and Simon a super, successful, solo, singing career (good alliteration there, might impress CS&N).

Enjoy the classic harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel on “Wednesday Morning 3 AM” which starts off as a tender love song and somehow devolves into criminal behavior.

Stay safe and well...and out of the robbery game.

I can hear the soft breathing

Of the girl that I love

As she lies here beside me

Asleep with the night

And her hair, in a fine mist

Floats on my pillow

Reflecting the glow

Of the winter moonlight

She is soft, she is warm

But my heart remains heavy

And I watch as her breasts

Gently rise, gently fall

For I know with the first light of dawn

I'll be leaving

And tonight will be

All I have left to recall

 Oh, what have I done?

Why have I done it?

I've committed a crime

I've broken the law

 For twenty-five dollars

And pieces of silver

I held up and robbed

A hard liquor store

 My life seems unreal

My crime an illusion

A scene badly written

In which I must play

Yet I know as I gaze

At my young love beside me

The morning is just a few hours away
