Friday February 11, 2022 “Two of Us” Aimee Mann & Michael Penn

We ran across these two artists separately with Aimee Mann fronting the group ‘Til Tuesday on their 1985 top ten pop hit “Voices Carry” which she wrote and Michael Penn, Chris and Sean’s older brother, with his 1990 AOR hit “No Myth”.

Penn’s musical career would move more to movie scores, writing the music for “Boogie NIghts” and “Hard Eight” with small roles in each of those films. Much like Michael Penn,  Aimee Mann’s subsequent work would include solo albums with many of her songs finding their way into movies and TV series.  Penn and Mann would marry in 1997.

Aimee Mann has done collaborations with Geddy Lee (rock group Rush), Elvis Costello, Jules Shear, who wrote Cyndi Lauper’s hit “All Through the Night”, and more recently with Ted Leo who with his band The Pharmacists has also covered Beatles songs.

Film director Paul Thomas Anderson said he "sat down to write an adaptation of Aimee Mann songs" which became the screenplay for the movie Magnolia based her songs with much of the dialog including direct lifts from her compositions.

Stay safe and well…and how appropriate for this musical couple to record their own version of the Beatles “Two of Us”.

Two of us riding nowhere

Spending someone's

Hard earned pay

You and me Sunday driving

Not arriving

On our way back home

We're on our way home

We're on our way home

We're going home

Two of us sending postcards

Writing letters

On my wall

You and me burning matches

Lifting latches

On our way back home

We're on our way home

We're on our way home

We're going home

You and I have memories

Longer than the road that stretches out ahead

Two of us wearing raincoats

Standing solo

In the sun

You and me chasing paper

Getting nowhere

On our way back home

We're on our way home

We're on our way home

We're going home

You and I have memories

Longer than the road that stretches out ahead

Two of us wearing raincoats

Standing solo

In the sun

You and me chasing paper

Getting nowhere

On our way back home

We're on our way home

We're on our way home

We're going home

We're going home

You better believe it

Goodbye
