Wednesday July 28, 2021 “You Can Call Me” Texas
Texas is my new favorite band. I had mentioned in a previous song of the day that Texas, a band ironically from Scotland, has been around for twenty-five years, sold fifty million records and I had never heard of them until I saw them on the music segment of CBS Saturday Morning. And yes I understand that their forte is cheesy pop music but the Texas sound just works so well for me.
Built around lead singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist Sharleen Spiteri, Texas, named after the Wim Weneders movie Paris, Texas, has had their music used in several high profile movies, as the theme song for the TV show Ellen, have collaborated with the Wu Tang Clan and they are huge in Europe and Australia.
In 1994 Texas made several trips to tour in North America. Despite this effort Texas failed to chart in the U.S., and sold a meager 38,000 copies of their album/CD. The band wrote off the American market thereafter, concentrating primarily on Europe.
Stay safe and well...and enjoy this 2021 release from the band you had probably never heard of either, Texas.
