Tuesday May 12, 2020 “I Thank You” Sam & Dave
Today is the last day of National Nurses Week, odd that it would end on a Tuesday, but let’s take another opportunity to offer these dedicated souls another heartfelt ‘Thank you!’ for all that they do, for all that they have done, for all that they continue to do. If I can paraphrase from our song of the day today, you didn’t have to do what you did, but you did, yes you did and I thank you.
This song was co-written by Isaac Hayes (the ‘Shaft’ Isaac Hayes) and was recorded at Stax records with the Memphis Group (think Donald "Duck" Dunn, Steve Cropper, Al Jackson, Booker T., etc.) backing Sam & Dave who were then the leading Stax act with ten consecutive top twenty songs at a time when both Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett were also recording at the record label.
Sam & Dave would inspire so many future acts, perhaps most visibly John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd who would vocally model the Blues Brothers after them, and of course ZZ Top who would have their own hit with this song. According to legend Billy Gibbons, ZZ Top lead guitarist and singer, was inspired to suggest recording "I Thank You" when he heard it on his car radio on his way to a recording session.
Stay safe and well…and still thankful.
