The “Fifth Beatle”.
In 1962 when Billy Preston was sixteen he was playing keyboards in Little Richard’s touring band and had the opportunity to meet and hang out with a then little known group known as The Beatles. Then in April 1969 he was invited by George Harrison to play on the Beatles “Let It Be” album/CD and on the first single from this record, "Get Back" he is credited as "The Beatles with Billy Preston", the only time such a joint credit had been given on an official Beatles-sanctioned release.
He wrote today’s song of the day along with many others not the least of which was the Joe Cocker multi-platinum tune “You Are So Beautiful” which Billy wrote not about a current flame but rather about his mother.
Billy Preston has played with so many notables including Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, the Rolling Stones, all of the individual Beatles and played piano on one of Johnny Cash’s final recordings, his cover of the Depeche Mode song “Personal Jesus”.
