Thursday May 21, 2020 “Something in the Air” Thunderclap Newman
Perhaps written in anticipation of the situation we all find ourselves currently in, “...lock up the streets and houses because there's something in the air…”, maybe skip the guns and ammo part, “Something in the Air” was originally titled “Revolution” but another group (The Beatles) had just released a song with that same name so Thunderclap Newman altered their title.
The band carried the name of their keyboard player Thunderclap Newman (really) and was comprised of Thunderclap, drummer/guitarist John “Speedy” Keen who wrote and sang this song, 16 year old guitarist (at that time) Jimmy McCulloch who would later join a band called Wings (think Paul McCartney) and bass player ‘Bijou Drains’, actually Pete Townshend of The Who, who also produced and arranged “Something in the Air”.
In addition to being a number one song in the UK “Something in the Air” makes frequent appearances in movies, TV shows and commercials. Someone is getting rich on this tune and I would be willing to bet it is not Speedy Keen, the songwriter.
Stay safe and well…the revolution is here (not really all this will pass quite naturally).
