Thursday March 26, 2020 “Do You Believe in Magic” Lovin Spoonfull
You had to know that we would get to John Sebastian and the Lovin Spoonfull for a dose of their good time music. And if there was a moment when we need some good times it would be this moment so let’s take to heart the belief that there’s magic in the music and the music is in all of us.
This song according to John Sebastian, who wrote it, was based on the Martha and the Vandellas song Heat Wave and if you listen to them together I think you will find the similarities.
Couple of Spoonfull fun facts: reportedly their very first gig at the Night Owl in Greenwich Village was so bad that the club owner threw them out and told them to come back when they could play (noted for all of us mediocre guitarists); also The Monkees TV sitcom was originally being built around the Spoonfull with the band to be the stars but publishing rights to their songs prevented them from using them on TV.
Lyrics are below, sing along, it starts with a smile that won’t wipe off your face no matter how hard you try.
Stay well and happy, and enjoy the video, especially the live false start.
