Thursday October 29, 2020 “Spooky” Classics IV
She may not be like yesterday’s ‘devil woman ‘ but she is definitely Spooky.
Lead singer of the Classics IV Dennis Yost started out in the group as their stand-up drummer. As in not sitting on a drum throne rather than maybe just being a stand up guy. Couldn’t find a video of that.
“Spooky” was originally conceived and recorded as an instrumental and achieved some minor hit status before producer Buddy Buie and lyricist James Cobb added words and gave it to the Classics IV for their top ten hit. The band would have additional charted hits before dissolving.
Before “Spooky” the Classics, they hadn’t added the IV yet, recorded a song called “Pollyana” written by Joe South and done in the style of the super successful Four Seasons which received some initial airplay in the New York market. That is until the radio stations were contacted by the Four Seasons' management with essentially a cease and desist order. And yes “Pollyana” does sound just like the Four Seasons.
Stay safe and well...and does lead singer Dennis Yost move in the video like he might be a marionette?
