Tuesday November 3, 2020 “Life is a Highway” Tom Cochrane (Red Rider)
In our quest for what life is we initially find that life is a highway...what?
This seize-the-day anthem was an international hit for the Canadian-native Tom Cochrane. Most outside of Canada don't know his name, but he is a celebrated artist in his home country. His honors include eight Juno Awards, membership in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, being an Honorary Colonel in the Canadian Air Force, and having been inducted onto the Canadian Walk of Fame. They take their rock stars seriously in Canada.
This deeply philosophical suggestion does however raise a number of questions. If life is a highway, what might the speed limit be; what direction does the highway go; are there road signs to let us know that we are headed the right way; will there be a McDonalds on the road; and most important will there be rest stops so we don’t have any embarrassing moments on our quest.
But let’s take a deeper look here. “Life’s like a road that you travel on, when there’s one day here and the next day gone”. Hard to argue with that. “Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand, sometimes you turn your back to the wind”. Boys and girls, I think Mr. Cochrane is on to something here.
“Life is a Highway” was an international hit for Tom Cochrane who before his solo efforts fronted the band Red Rider. Think “Lunatic Fringe” featured in the Matthew Modine movie Vision Quest and basically the same song as The Smith’s “How Soon Is Now”.
I think we are off to a good start here with our own vision quest. What is life, it is a highway.
Stay safe and well...and drive carefully.
