Monday November 9, 2020 “Be a Rebel” New Order

New Order has a new song and it sounds just like old New Order, but that’s a good thing.

This band formed after the dissolution of Joy Division following the death of lead singer Ian Curtis, not a theme for the week, just a coincidence.  Composed of members, vocalist and guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris and later Gillian Gilbert.

New Order has won several NME Awards, Brit Awards and Billboard Music Awards, have sold more than two million albums/CDs and are sometimes considered a ‘dance’ band because of their success in dance clubs in the 80’s.  Much more than that, if you don’t know New Order you should check out some of their catalog and the very distinctive voice of Bernard Sumner (not related to Gordon Sumner-Sting of the band The Police).

"Temptation" one of New Order's best-known recordings due in part to its appearance in the movie Trainspotting  where the lyrics are sung by Kelly MacDonald's Diane character while she's taking a bath.

Legend has it that the band The Killers took their name from the fictional band in the New Order video for their single “Crystal”.  Brandon Flowers of The Killers is clearly a fan of Bernard Sumner as they have appeared together frequently.

Stay safe and well...and be a rebel, lyrically a song for the times.

I feel the need for harmony

And I look around, but it's not what I see

I see angry faces looking at me

And I want to know what makes them so

For this world can be a dangerous place

But it's all we got, and it's quite a lot

Take a look at yourself

You may not be the same as everyone else

You're just different, and that's okay

We all follow our own way

And if you find that they won't listen

Then they've got nothing to say

So don't get mad and don't feel sad

Be a rebel, not a devil

(Be a rebel, not a devil)

There will come a day

When your fear and self-doubt fades away

Because you have achieved what you need

There's no doubt in your heart

Not a care

It's a funny affair

Take a look at yourself

You may not be the same as everyone else

You're just different, and that's okay

We all follow our own way

And if you find that they won't listen

Then they've got nothing to say

So don't get mad and don't feel sad

Be a rebel, not a devil
