Wednesday January 6, 2021 “The Crying Game” George O’Dowd (Boy George)
This could have been included in our movie songs week way back, but, well it wasn’t.
I think this 1992 film is a touching story about love that overcomes racial barriers and gender expectations...OK there’s that robe scene. It was also an interesting and somewhat negative take on the IRA with a surprising action movie sub-text.
And the title song by Boy George captures the perfect mood of the film.
As a qualifier, there are several members of my family who to this day strongly question my opinion of this movie.
The side story though is on the original recording of the title song in 1964 by Dave Berry (David Holgate Grundy) who had an unusual ambition for a pop performer trying to make a name for himself. He appeared on television completely hidden by props. In his own words, to "not appear, to stay behind something” and not be seen. He often hid behind the upturned collar of his leather jacket, or wrapped himself around, and effectively behind, the microphone lead.
Probably one reason you have never heard of Dave Berry.
“The Crying Game” song was co-written by Geoff Stephens who would later form the New Vaudeville Band and write and produce their only US hit “Winchester Cathedral”, we will forgive him for both.
Stay safe and well...and remember there are no barriers to love.
