Thursday December 24, 2020 “The Christmas Song” Nat King Cole

You will note that this is called ‘the’ Christmas Song, maybe for good reason.

For me this takes me back to the excitement of buying a Christmas tree on Roosevelt Avenue with my mother and all the anticipation of Christmas morning.  Midnight mass, snow overnight, the thrill of opening gifts early in the morning, Christmas breakfast. All such wonderful things.

Whenever I hear it I swear that the scent of evergreen surrounds me and I get really nostalgic for chestnuts, which are not nearly as tasty as Nat King Cole would like you to believe. I hope this song brings you the same nostalgic feelings.  Maybe it gets overplayed, wait it can’t really be overplayed.

There have to be a hundred versions of this song, written by Mel Torme, who probably bought a castle in Spain with his royalties, but the smooth, smokey and sweet interpretation by Nat King Cole will always be my favorite.

Stay safe and well...and let’s stretch these feelings to last all year long.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire

Jack Frost nipping at your nose

Yuletide carols being sung by a choir

And folks dressed up like Eskimos

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe

Help to make the season bright

Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow

Will find it hard to sleep tonight

They know that Santa's on his way

He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh

And every mother's child is gonna spy

To see if reindeers really know how to fly

And so I'm offering this simple phrase

To kids from one to ninety-two

Although it's been said many times, many ways

Merry Christmas to you

And so I'm offering this simple phrase

To kids from one to ninety-two

Although it's been said many times, many ways

Merry Christmas to you
