Sunday May 10, 2020 “Thank You for Being a Friend” Andrew Gold
It’s Mother’s Day when we express our gratitude to mothers for teaching us to tie our shoes, making peanut and butter and jelly sandwiches for school lunches, reading bedtime stories, not killing us when we tested her patience, laughing at our jokes that were possibly not so funny, getting those band-aids on minor injuries, understanding when things weren’t going so well, teaching us to drive, and all the many trivial and major moments in life that she was there for (including the very beginning!), and being the best friend who asks nothing in return.
Andrew Gold offers us this lovely ‘thank you’ song to do just that.
As for the artist, he had a remarkable and diverse musical career having played, recorded, toured with and produced effectively every major artist you could think of. Here’s a couple of hints if you are guessing who that might be; Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Freddie Mercury, Ringo Starr, Cher, Neil Young, Jackson Brown, Brian Wilson, Neil Diamond, Eagles...I think you get the picture.
And since it’s Mothers Day let’s talk a bit about Andrew’s mother Marni Nixon, the most famous singer that you have probably never heard of. Marni Nixon ’ghosted’ the vocals for many film actresses who won accolades for their musical performaces that she secretly performed in movies like “My Fair Lady” (Audrey Hepburn), “West Side Story” (Natalie Wood) and “The King & I” (Deborah Kerr) along with so many others.
So let’s say ‘thank you’ today to all the mothers for being a friend...and so much more.
Stay safe and well...and mothers ‘won’t you stand up and take a bow’.
