Saturday May 9, 2020 “Christina’s World” Big Dish
Since we are discouraged from leaving our homes, let’s take a musical excursion to the MoMA today and check out the world famous Andrew Wyeth painting “Christina’s World” compliments of Scottish band Big Dish.
The painting shows Andrew Wyeth’s then neighbor Anna Christina Olson who suffered a degenerative muscular disorder that prevented her from walking, sprawled in a field, looking longingly toward her actual home, a far-off farmhouse. Wyeth, who had known the real ‘Christina’ for years, said he wanted to depict ‘her extraordinary conquest of a life which most people would consider hopeless’.
This song, inspired by the painting, creates a similar sense of separation surrounded with an upbeat production that touches on Wyeth’s sense of hopefulness in dealing with what others would consider a severe handicap.
As for the band, Big Dish (no idea on the name) they had modest success with their initial album/CD “Swimmer”which contains Christina’s World and some other very likeable tunes that should have received greater visibility and radio airplay than they did. Singer songwriter Steven Lindsay would go on from Big Dish to write and score TV shows and produce and manage other musical groups.
