Monday August 15, 2022 “Apple Peaches Pumpkin Pie” Jay & the Techniques
So this week we will be celebrating National Bratwurst Day, National Hot & Spicy Food Day, National Potato Day, and National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day, and other soon to be federal holiday occasions and that seemed reason enough to me to celebrate food in rock music.
I realize that it may not be appropriate to start with dessert but why would we let appropriate define what we do, so here we have “Apples,Peaches Pumpkin Pie” by Jay & the Techniques, not to be confused with (different) Jay & the Americans or the Jaynetes and definitely not Jay-Z the Jayhawks or Jay Ferguson...so many Jays.
Jay and his Techniques were a Philadelphia group whose sound and songs were more pop than soul, and they would hit the charts with their joyous "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie," which was their lone Top 10 R&B and pop hit in 1967 on Smash Records. However they would return with a minor hit “Keep the Ball Rollin” also in 1967.
The band was comprised of Jay Proctor, lead vocalist and primary founder of the group, George "Lucky" Lloyd, vocalist, Dante Dancho, lead guitar, Chuck Crowl, bass guitar, Karl Landis, drums, Ronnie Goosley, saxophone, John Walsh (not that one), trumpet.
If you listen carefully you may hear Nick Ashford, Valerie Simpson and Melba Moore who did backing vocals on Jay & the Techniques songs.
Stay safe and well…and couldn’t resist this video and when you watch it I believe you will understand.
