Saturday April 11, 2020 “Get Together” The Youngbloods
Get Together was originally recorded in 1965 by the We Five, yeah who can figure out why they decided on that name, but the song didn’t hit. Then the Jefferson Airplane recorded it in 1966 but nothing yet, so Jesse Colin Young (born Perry Miller in Queens NY) and the Youngbloods released “Get Together” for yet another try in 1967 and although it didn’t get any traction initially, in 1969 it was used as a radio spot by DJ Big Dan Ingram at WABC in NY and after that exposure it grew to become the sweet anthem that it is today.
The song was written by Dino Valente (born Chet Powers but changed his name to Dino Valente?) who would go on to write songs for and front Quicksilver Messenger Service, a band that had a number of interesting songs that got a good deal of FM airplay in the early 70’s.
”Get Together” provides so much fine sentiment overall so 'come on people now smile on your brother' and join in on this 60’s anthem knowing that we will all get together again, hopefully soon.
Give the Woodstock video that accompanies the song a look and see if you can identify all the 60's rock celebrities it checks both on stage and in the audience. BTW the Youngbloods did not play at Woodstock I, in case you were wondering, but “Get Together” was performed by Richie Havens, the not originally scheduled opening act at the festival.
Be safe and well…and look forward to getting together.
